Depth is a Little Shallow I Would Say
This is a rebar rust stain in a pebble finished pool. The pool was inside the builder’s warranty period and they wanted to know why the pool was having rebar stain problems in a practically brand new pool, I’m very sure the pool owner did too. It didn’t take much digging to find the rebar in this pool. I like to see several inches of shotcrete coverage and 1/2 inch thickness of plaster or pebble finish material covering the reinforcement bars. I believe the pebble installers did a good job on their end but I would have to say the shotcrete crew didn’t.
Even though the rebar looks clean and rust free on the right hand side of the hole I dug, there is more work to do. The oxidation from the underside of the rebar causes this little rust cloud to show so I need to uncover and remove more rebar.
Although the depth (or coverage) of the rebar isn’t always the cause of rebar rust stains, it can be a factor. The pool builder, who paid me on this job, can now go back to the shotcrete company with my pictures in hand to get reimbursed for the cost of repair.
